Track info
Every year in Girls Write Nashville, students work with a professional female artist mentor, learn to write and produce original music in a supportive community of peers, and are then guided through the vulnerable process of releasing that work into the world.
This year, because of COVID-19, the program, like the rest of the world, was forced to adapt, with the Safer-At-Home “shut down” occuring right as students would normally be preparing to head into the studio. But instead of cancelling the project, Girls Write Nashville got creative.
Students each wrote a “song from quarantine”, not necessarily even about the pandemic, but just something they had to say about their experience in this moment in time. Participants then worked, for the first time in program history, on recording their own songs at home, most of them using the simple setup of their phones and a free cloud-based recording app called Bandlab for Education. Songs were then passed around to local female studio musicians to help complete the tracks. The result is an inspiring, entirely remotely-recorded album of youth-written songs about life in 2020.
