San Mateo is the brainchild of Matteo Burr and Matthew Hagen. Most known for his work with artist Grace Potter in their critically acclaimed rock band, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Burr shifted his energy in 2015 to Puerto Rico where he became a pioneer for helping independent musicians through his recording studio San Juan Sound. In early 2020, Hagen (Lendway/The High Breaks) and fellow Vermont artist Craig Mitchell (Oliver Twisted/Orange Factory) visited Puerto Rico to record the first batch of singles with an island wrecking crew featuring Armando Lopez and Fernan Rivera from psych rock band Epilogio and Jorge Andrés Ferreras (Senor Lagosta) Zacchaeu'us Paul (Ile, Piquete) and Rey Marrero (Yibáro)
Traditionally inspired by the deep soul songs of the 60's and 70's, the lyrical content is unabashedly an open heart of longing and lusting for love. The music is an accessible palate of rhythm, vintage texture and modern psychedelia that gives the listener freedom and choice of what to latch on too. An undeniable hook plants the seed early that states, "Can't Get Enough" is a relatable song with conviction that blends decades and genres.
