The late South African spring of 2020, sees the release of highly anticipated full album “in the Kingdom of the Aloës” from amaFranx. Franco amaFranx, a composing singer and bass player, has pulled a small orchestra together for this album all of which was recorded in an old church in Cape Town, South Africa.

Featuring on this Album are internationally acclaimed musicians Matthijs van Dijk and Ronan Skillen (among others) all operating under the production capacities of multi award winning Mr. Simon Fuzzy Ratcliffe of Sound and Motion Studios and the creative direction of amaFranx. As with many other timeless recordings there exists a special type of magical energy that musicians and listeners alike can only hope to encounter.

A dense forest of sound created by everything from the Didgeridoo, Mopane and UFO Shakers, Camelthorn seed Pods, Indian Percussion and Drums (in many forms) to the French horn, Pipe Organ, Violins, Duduk, Bassoon, flutes and a Thunder Sheet accompanying a unique voice woven together by the ever-present narrative of impeccable bass playing skills.

The artist eludes to a concept called “The Imaginerium” in which the music can be interpreted by bass and vocals alone (especially in live environments) as well as expand into the orchestral sounds heard on his latest release. These interpretations form into a listener’s gift over time in which they may interpret music with a personalized imaginary orchestra.

There are seven very engaging compositions on this album which are curated in a captivating adventure for listeners. Classifying this music as Cinematic, Jazz, Reggae would accurately describe characteristics although the album absolutely defies specifications and exceeds the expectation of what can be done with over 99% acoustic instruments.

It is clear that the production took place in a highly professional environment, yet there is still a sense of humour in the album that can bring a delightful resolution to some of the hauntingly beautiful harmonies and tension from the brass horns. On-that-topic; listen to the layering of the amaFranx mini choir for a second time thrill, and while you’re re-engaging with the music, enjoy lasting replays by following the narrative of each instrument.

This is the fifth release from amaFranx with three EP’s, four music videos and one single. All of the previous works can be enjoyed with the conceptual application of this Imaginarium, though in the Kingdom of the Aloës we as the listeners are spoilt with not only an immense spectrum of sound, but a conglomerate of inspiring performances. It is safe to say that this album marks the most significant and exciting moment for amaFranx in the trajectory of his musical career.
