Defunk – Back To the Funk LP
It is often said that music speaks in ways that words alone cannot, and Calgary-based Defunk’s works is a prime exhibit of this. His newest Back to the Funk LP is brimming with smooth yet simultaneously powerful bass music, built upon distinctly intricate beats coupled with his signature components of funk.
Back to the Funk comprises of sixteen tracks, each a unique foray into a new realm of bass music. While the songs differ in style, they each live up to the name of the album, clearly indicating Defunk’s devotion to the funky vibes from which he derives his alias. Every track is built upon a groovy, bouncing beat and highlighted by jazzy riffs on guitar, saxophone and a variety of other instruments.
Defunk’s most recent work is further accentuated by its numerous featured instrumentalists, vocalists and even co-producers. Fellow beat makers including K+Labs and Flavours infused the tracks with their own unique flair of glitch, adding yet another layer of depth to Defunk’s work. Instrumentalists such as DirtyPhonic (saxophone) and Sam Klass (guitar) enhanced the atmosphere of the songs via the expert use of their chosen instruments while vocalists such as Vindaloo and The Wednesday Experiment harmonized with Defunk’s thumping melodies to create vibrant auroras of soulful lyrics and resonating bass.
Back to the Funk is a testament to Defunk’s prowess as both a producer and a collaborator as each and every one of these sixteen tracks is a standalone work of art serving to create a unique atmosphere and experience for the listener. This LP is integral to the collection of any glitch-hop or bass music aficionado, so be sure to grab your copy today!
