This is a Hanukkah time homage to my youth and the youth of others who grew up with a Jewish upbringing. A youth overshadowed by hard working immigrant parents and grandparents who paved a road that isn't achievable anymore. We all have unique stories to tell and mine involve inherited fears and paranoia passed down from my mother who's parents fled the nazi's, to be born in Cuba only to later flee to America in the face of a revolution.
Now that my folks are in heaven, the lyric "candles burning" has a deeper meaning as yahrzeit candles are lit ever year to honor the souls close to us who've passed on.
