First Draft is a songwriting compilation designed to capture the irreplaceable charm and vibe found in the first recording of a new song. Coordinated by Chris Grabau with support from the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis, songwriters Kevin Buckley, Shane Devine, and Danny Kathriner joined Grabau in a series of prompt writing sessions. Each songwriter randomly drew from a collection of prompts and had one week to write and record a new song based on their prompts. Songs were recorded using cell phones, tape recorders, and computers with minimal overdubs. The result is a collection that prioritizes inspiration over perfection and discovery over polish.
