STARHEADBODY is an open-ended musical collective, established and led by professional skateboarder Evan Smith who lives by the motto “Everybody In”. Each STARHEADBODY release features new collaborative artists, allowing a wide range of expression through experimental compositions and recording environments. This mindset allows Evan to capture audio snapshots of the many adventures he finds himself in by collaborating with other musicians he discovers along the way, whether it’s skateboarding through Europe or searching for himself in a cabin in the woods. Every STARHEADBODY project represents a new experience, through the psyche of the different personalities collaborating on a common goal.
This latest release, Neon Roppongi, was recorded solo by Evan smith in the streets of Japan, and it provided the soundtrack to B.B Bastidas’ 2017 art exhibit “Enter:Vision” in Tokyo. Evan reminisces: "I walked the streets with my midi device and found inspiration throughout multiple cities in Japan". With the lights and colors of these cities Evan found a serenity in expressing his visions through the sounds in this album, aimed at progressive trance and techno influences.
The first song “Neon Roppongi” is an introduction to the heavy machinery and constant progression of the Japanese culture, ending with four gong rings, as there are four directions on a compass.
“Arcade Dreamcast” emulates fast moving lights and smiles with laughter flying through the city as the gaming industry thrives.
“Sushi Stix” is a composition of serene tones to induce the peaceful nature of the food industry, where there is another tasteful delight around each corner.
“Space station ( 宇宙ステーション)” illustrates the pinnacle feeling of being surrounded by consumers and industry. When you walk through Shibuya Tokyo, there are 5000 people all crossing the intersection at the same time, all looking to buy and to be supplied by the industry. If not for this, the world would have a large gap in influences given from one country to another. I know that we are mostly at war to create jobs, but we all influence each other and each other's children with how we present ourselves as a country, which makes Industries the world leaders.
When listening to “Throwing Star”, imagine a ninja throwing a star in slow motion and throughout its theta and resonance, the star finally sticks into its destination with precision and accuracy.
In the final track on the album, “Atoms Trance”, imagine molecular singularity all dancing together to make a trance worth moving to. The two-minute theta at the end of this last track takes the human from the human and sends it back to the completion. We are all one ever-loving thing. Unity. Sound bathing.
