You are a nice surprise, the first full-length and vinyl release by Trunkweed, was written over several months, from fall 2014 until spring 2015, during a time of transformation and hopelessness. Recording took place, over the course of 1 week, at Bad Racket Studios in Cleveland, Ohio. Recorded and mixed by: James Karanen and Mastered by: Zach Weeks. These songs prophesied much of our own individual futures before ultimately losing our own sanity.
Written and performed by: Brady Kelly
Ranked on Post-Trash's "Best of 2016" list.
"Baltimore’s Trunkweed make thoroughly baked-sounding, loud-quiet-loud rock (with touches a surf and noise thrown in there) that feels fresh and alive and rarely traces over the lines of the bands they clearly love, such as Dinosaur Jr. or The Oh Sees, and are probably the best guitar-based band around, save for Screaming Females. You are a nice surprise is an uncharacteristically prophetic full-length featuring ‘Dark Daze,’ one of the group’s catchiest songs that delightfully devolves into guitar screech that would make tall dweeb and screeching guitar hero Thurston Moore jealous."
- Brandon Soderburg - Baltimore Beat
Their newest record, you are a nice surprise has a subtle yet intense quality to it, like a compact, white hot flame that at times lashes out with a scorching intensity. "
- Mike Powell - Buffablog
"You are a nice surprise spirals through life’s big questions with a quirky attitude, punching guitar chords and an upbeat stature. Trunkweed sets up a dichotomy through feeling hopeless yet having fun, meshing surf-pop that bounces with purpose."
